Netwal, Hanson and Sperl garner all-conference honors in final IIAC meet

MOUNT VERNON - Cornell College sent three seniors out with all-conference accolades during the final weekend of the Iowa Conference Track and Field Outdoor Championships, held Friday and Saturday at Central's Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium in Pella.

Cornell throwers Dan Netwal (Eldridge/North Scott) and Julia Hanson (Charles City/Charles City) and jumper Brittany Sperl (Boyd, Wis./Stanley-Boyd) earned all-conference status for placing in the top three in their respective events. Netwal was the Rams' top individual finisher, placing second in the javelin throw. Hanson took third in the hammer throw and Sperl placed third in the triple jump.

Netwal and Hanson are both first-time all-IIAC performers. Sperl also received all-league recognition during the indoor season for placing second in the triple jump.

"In the case of all three senior athletes, they stuck it out and put the time in. They all performed well in their final conference competition. I'm real proud of them," Cornell head coach Lonnie Speidel said. "As a team, I thought all the kids competed hard. We just need more scorers. It was definitely not for a lack of effort from our kids."

The Rams finished with four all-conference outdoor athletes, including a third-place showing in the decathlon from junior James Wohrley (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) at the IIAC Multi-Events May 1-2 in Pella.

Cornell placed seventh in the nine-team women's field with 36 points. The Rams took ninth on the men's side with 32 points. Wartburg claimed its 10th consecutive IIAC women's team crown and host Central won the men's title.

Netwal, seeded fourth in the javelin, improved his standing by two places with a career-best throw of 174 feet, 5 inches. He topped his previous best mark this spring by nearly seven feet.

Hanson cracked the top three in the hammer throw with a toss of 145-07, her best mark of the season. Sperl leapt 34-01.50 in the triple jump to place third.

The Cornell women picked up a fourth-place finish from Michelle Hannemann (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) in the pole vault (8-06), a fifth from Madison Craw (Mason City/Mason City) in the shot put (41-06) and a pair of sixths from Hanson in the discus (136-10) and Rachelle Hawkins (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) in the 1,500 (4:55.85). The Rams also received points from Jessica Strains (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) in the triple jump (seventh), Allison Nappe (Monticello/Monticello) in the discus (seventh), Allie Jagielo (Almond, Wis./Tri-County) in the 3,000 steeplechase (eighth), Cayla Techlin (Little Chute, Wis./Little Chute) in the high jump (eighth), and the 4x400 (seventh), 4x100 (eighth) relays.

Freshman Adam Rooyakkers (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) turned in a strong race in the finals of the 800. He placed fourth with a season-best time of 1:57.35 after qualifying ninth for the finals.

Rounding out Cornell's scorers on the men's side were Chase Nowak (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) in the 5,000 (eighth), Ben Jacobs (Three Rivers, Mich./Three Rivers) in the 10,000 (eighth), Drew Campbell (Independence/Independence) in the high jump (eighth), Wohrley in the pole vault (eighth), Chase Johnson (West Union/North Fayette) in the discus (eighth) and the 4x400 relay (eighth).
