Wohrley, Craw reach NCAA provisional marks; Hawkins sets school record in 800

Coming up - Friday-Saturday, May 8-9, at Iowa Conference Track and Field Outdoor Championships, Central College, Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium, Pella.

The top three finishers in each event at this weekend's IIAC Championships earn all-conference honors. The Rams return one all-IIAC performer from the 2008 meet in sophomore Michelle Hannemann (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland), who placed second in the pole vault. At last year's event, Cornell finished seventh in the women's team race and eighth on the men's side.

Ram rewind - Cornell established two school records and set two NCAA provisional marks in a pair of competitions last week.

Junior James Wohrley (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) earned all-conference status for placing third in the decathlon this past weekend at the IIAC Multi-Events in Pella. He racked up 6,335 points in the 10 events, good for a school record and an NCAA provisional mark. Wohrley broke the old school mark of 6,289 points, held by 2008 national qualifier James Klobucar.

Wohrley's two-day performance was highlighted with wins in the shot put (41 feet, 8.5 inches) and discus throw (127-01). He finished third in the pole vault (12-07.50) and javelin throw (146-03) and took fourth in both the high jump (6-00.75) and 110 hurdles (16.43).

Senior teammate Dan Netwal (Eldridge/North Scott) placed 10th in the decathlon standings with 4,907 points. He won the javelin with a season-best mark of 167-08 and was fourth in the discus (96-05).

Central's Kurtis Brondyke captured the decathlon crown with 6,491 points. Ethan Miller, also of Central, took second with 6,444.

The Rams picked up six event titles at the non-scored Loras Twilight Meet Thursday in Dubuque. It was another record-setting day for Hawkins, who posted a new school mark in the 800-meter run. She placed third in a time of 2 minutes, 16.94 seconds, breaking Jaime Scholz's mark of 2:18.49 set in 2004. Hawkins now holds or is part of seven school records at Cornell.

Sophomore Madison Craw (Mason City/Mason City) won the shot put with a NCAA provisional toss of 42-04. She reached the standard on her second throw, beating her closest competitor by nearly three feet.

Cornell also received wins from senior Lindsey Kuhlmann (Fairbank/Wapsie Valley) in the 1500 (5:00.20), senior Cayla Techlin (Little Chute, Wis./Little Chute) in the high jump (4-09), senior Brittany Sperl (Boyd, Wis./Stanley-Boyd) in the triple jump (34-03), junior Kelly Kall (Medina, Ohio/Medina) in the javelin (92-01) and freshman Marshall Kraker (Parshall, Colo./West Grand) in the javelin (146-07).

"I thought we had a pretty good meet at Loras. The field sizes were small, but our kids competed hard," Cornell head coach Lonnie Speidel said. "We now look to this weekend and the conference championships. I wish we were a little bit healthier as a team but we will compete our hardest on Friday and Saturday."
