Hawkins nearly breaks own school mark in winning 1500 run
Coming up -Thursday, April 30, at Loras Twilight, Loras College, Dubuque, 4 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, May 1-2, at Iowa Conference Multi-Events, Central College, Pella.
Ram rewind - Cornell senior Rachelle Hawkins (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly), battling back from an Achilles injury, returned to her winning form in taking the title in the 1500-meter run at the Kip Janvrin Open Friday, hosted by Simpson College in Indianola. No team scores were recorded.
Hawkins raced to victory in a competitive field featuring 49 runners in the 1500. She crossed the finish line in a swift time of 4 minutes, 45.41 seconds, coming within .06 seconds of resetting her own school record in the event established earlier this season. Danielle Magargee of UW-Milwaukee came in second in 4:47.09.
"Rachelle has been hampered with an injury since the Rhodes Invitational (March 28) and this was a nice return to racing for her," Cornell head coach Lonnie Speidel said. "She ran the relay at Grinnell (April 18) to test it out and proved with this race that she'll be ready for the conference meet. She's worked tremendously hard on cross-training and with our trainer, Eric, to get back to where she started the outdoor season."
Junior Allison Nappe (Monticello/Monticello) threw a lifetime best in the discus. She placed sixth with a mark of 126 feet, 11 inches. Senior Julia Hanson (Charles City/Charles City) finished two places behind in 125-08. The Rams also got a solid performance in the triple jump from Brittany Sperl (Boyd, Wis./Stanley-Boyd), who placed seventh in 32-07.75.
The Cornell men received top-10 individual finishes from freshman Marshall Kraker (Parshall, Colo./West Grand) and sophomore Roli Teko-Folly (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo) in the field events. Kraker reached the finals in the javelin throw and placed ninth with a mark of 146-10. Teko-Folly went 38-02.25 in the triple jump and took 10th.
Junior James Wohrley (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) set a personal record in the pole vault with a mark of 12-11.50, placing 11th. Andrew Tobben (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) took 11th in the 5000 (15:54.78) and Reed Skoog (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) was 13th in the 400 (51.14).
The Rams resume competition Thursday at the Loras Twilight Meet in Dubuque. Wohrley and Dan Netwal (Eldridge/North Scott) will compete in the decathlon at IIAC Multi-Events Friday and Saturday, hosted by Central College in Pella.
Wohrley will try to build off his pentathlon title at the IIAC Indoor Championships in February. The Rams crowned last year's IIAC decathlon champion in James Klobucar, who graduated last spring.
