Women's 4x800 relay breaks school mark set in 1998

Ram rewind - Cornell set a school record in the women's 4x800 relay and senior Julia Hanson (Charles City/Charles City) captured a title in the hammer throw at the Dick Young Classic Saturday, hosted by Grinnell College.
The Rams took seventh in the 14-team women's standings with 48 points. Cornell's men's squad finished eighth out of 16 teams with 30.5 points. Nebraska Wesleyan claimed both men's and women's team titles. A handful of Rams were held out of competition due to injuries.
"We had a very average performance at Grinnell," Cornell head coach Lonnie Speidel said. "We are really banged up right now and need to get some people healthy. Because of this, we were conservative in our running events and didn't compete in as many races and relays as we would have liked. We have to get healthy and work on improving as a team these final few weeks."
Cornell's record-setting 4x800 quartet of senior Lindsey Kuhlmann (Fairbank/Wapsie Valley), sophomore Allie Jagielo (Almond, Wis./Tri-County), sophomore Andrea Aerts (David City, Neb./East Butler) and senior anchor Rachelle Hawkins (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) turned in a winning mark of 9 minutes, 55.90 seconds. Despite competing against only one other team in the event, the group broke the school mark of 10:00.85, established in 1998.
"That relay broke a school record that we've been trying to break the last few years at Grinnell," Speidel said. "Grinnell is about the only place we run that race and the women finally got the record."
The Rams received strong performances in the throwing events from Hanson and sophomore Madison Craw (Mason City/Mason City). Hanson placed first out of 13 competitors in the hammer throw with a season-best mark of 142 feet, 7 inches. Craw took third in the event with a toss of 134-2.
Craw finished fourth in the shot put with a heave of 40-11.50, her best outdoor mark of the spring. Hanson also picked up team points in the discus, placing sixth in 123-10. The Rams received a fourth-place finish from Michelle Hannemann (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) in the pole vault (8-06.25). Brittany Sperl (Boyd, Wis./Stanley-Boyd) took sixth in the triple jump (31-07.25) and Leanne Carberry (Idledale, Colo./Bear Creek) clocked a season-best time in the 400 (1:02.79), placing sixth.
On the men's side, freshman Chase Nowak (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) continued to run well in the distance events. He finished fifth out of 22 runners in the 5000 with a time of 15:44.76. Freshman Drew Campbell (Independence/Independence) scored the men's top individual finish, clearing 6-01.50 in the high jump for second place. Dan Netwal (Eldridge/North Scott) followed in third place (5-09.75).
Cornell's 4x800 team of Reed Skoog (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South), Kirkwood Donavin (Salt Lake City, Utah/West), Matt Evans (Racine, Wis./Prairie) and Adam Rooyakkers (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) took fourth in 8:17.60. Rooyakkers (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) also placed eighth in the 800 and Andrew Tobben (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) was 10th in the 1500.
