Women capture team title, men take second at Cornell Invitational
MOUNT VERNON - Cornell College's women's track and field team won three events and edged rival Coe by four points in taking the team title at the Cornell Invitational Saturday at Ash Park Stadium.
The Rams were strong in the field events, picking up individual wins from senior Brittany Sperl (Boyd, Wis./Stanley-Boyd) in the triple jump, sophomore Madison Craw (Mason City/Mason City) in the shot put and sophomore Michelle Hannemann (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) in the pole vault. The Cornell women racked up 137 team points, nipping runner-up Coe (133) and third-place Mount Mercy (129).
Cornell placed second in the men's team race with 152 points, 10 behind Iowa Central Community College. The Rams fielded a pair of individual event champions with freshman Chase Nowak (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) in the 1500 run and sophomore Roli Teko-Folly (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo) in the triple jump. Cornell also won the 4x400 and 4x800 men's relays.
"I was happy with our overall team results, but individually, we need to see improvement in all event areas," Cornell head coach Lonnie Speidel said. "We will work hard this week and get after it at the Dick Young Classic at Grinnell this weekend."
The Cornell women finished 1-2 in the triple jump with Sperl (32 feet, 9 inches) and Jessica Strains (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South). Strains set a personal-best mark of 32-3. Hannemann cleared 8-00.50 in the pole vault and Craw recorded a winning toss of 40-06.75 in the shot put.
Senior Lindsey Kuhlmann (Fairbank/Wapsie Valley) had a big meet in the distance events, placing second in the 800 (2 minutes, 31.2 seconds) and third in the 1500 (5:03.6). She set outdoor personal records in both events. Junior Kelly Kall (Medina, Ohio/Medina) recorded lifetime bests in all four field events in which she competed, including the shot put, discus, hammer throw and javelin.
The Rams received runner-up finishes from Andrea Aerts (David City, Neb./East Butler) in the 5000 and Julia Hanson (Charles City/Charles City) in the hammer throw.
Nowak claimed the men's 1500 title in 4:07.8, nosing Mount Mercy's Gabe Roseales by 0.3 seconds. Teko-Folly established a personal record in taking the triple jump (41-01.50).
Junior James Wohrley (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) enjoyed a strong meet, setting personal records in the high jump (6-03.50), discus (129-10) and 110 hurdles (16.40). He finished second in the high jump by virtue of more misses than the first-place competitor who cleared the same height.
The men's 4x400 relay of Reed Skoog (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South), Wohrley, Dan Netwal (Eldridge, North Scott) and Khaliph Green (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius College Prep) clocked a winning time of 3:42.50. The 4x800 relay of Chris Stadler (Portland, Ore./Lincoln), Matt Evans (Racine, Wis./Prairie), David Kuhlmann (Readlyn/Wapsie Valley) and Adam Rooyakkers (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) won with a mark of 8:29.10.
Ben Jacobs (Three Rivers, Mich./Three Rivers) took second in the 5000 and Netwal was second in the javelin.
