Hanson claims two titles, Hawkins sets mark in 1500 run in outdoor opener

Coming up - Saturday, April 11, Cornell Invitational, Mount Vernon, 10 a.m. (field events), 11 a.m. (running events).

Ram Review - Cornell captured three individual titles and senior Rachelle Hawkins (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) broke a 23-year school record in the 1500 run as the Rams opened the outdoor track and field season at the Rhodes Invitational Saturday during the team's spring break trip to Memphis, Tenn.

"We had an OK meet," Cornell head coach Lonnie Speidel said. "Of our returning athletes, seven of them posted personal records in their respective events. It was barely 50 (degrees) on Saturday with some rain and 20 to 30 mile per hour winds, so the conditions were not that good. But it was good to get a competition under our belt and we enjoyed some good sightseeing and team bonding, so it was well worth the trip down."

Senior Julia Hanson (Charles City/Charles City) came away with two event titles in throwing events. She won the discus with a mark of 129 feet, 1 inch and set a personal record in the hammer throw with a winning toss of 141-02.

The Rams picked up another title in the field events from sophomore Madison Craw (Mason City/Mason City), who won the shot put with a heave of 40-06.75. Craw also took second in the hammer (123-01) with a personal-best mark. Cornell's women received other runner-up finishes from Allison Nappe (Monticello/Monticello) in the discus, Kirtley Hitt (Shorewood, Minn./Lakeside) in the shot put, Brittany Sperl (Boyd, Wis./Stanley-Boyd) in the long jump and Hawkins in the 1500.

Hawkins, coming off a stellar indoor season in which she garnered All-America honors in the mile run, picked up where she left off in her first outdoor competition. She turned in a time of 4 minutes, 45.35 seconds in the 1500, breaking Nancy Ladehoff's long-standing school record of 4:47.60 set in 1986. Hawkins' time is only six seconds off the NCAA provisional mark.

Senior Lindsey Kuhlmann (Fairbank/Wapsie Valley) had a strong performance in the 5000, placing fifth in 19:09.80. She shattered her previous best mark by 27 seconds.

Junior James Wohrley (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) led the Cornell men with three top-eight finishes. He placed fourth in the javelin (138-04) and fifth in the pole vault (11-05.75) while taking eighth in the 110 hurdles in a personal-best time of 16.80.

Freshman Adam Rooyakkers (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) posted a pair of fifth-place showings in the 800 (2:05.00) and 1500 (4:18.37). Reed Skoog (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) took fourth in the 400 and Adam Norton (Rushford, Minn./Rushford-Peterson) was fourth in the discus.

The Rams have two weeks off from competition before hosting the Cornell Invitational April 11.
