Wohrley wins pentathlon; Hawkins earns all-conference honors for fourth consecutive year
Coming up - Saturday, March 7, at Cyclone Qualifier, Iowa State University, Ames, 10 a.m.
Ram Review - Cornell's track and field teams earned all-conference honors in five events, set two school records and crowned one individual champion at the Iowa Conference Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday, hosted by Wartburg College at Hoover Fieldhouse in Waverly.
Cornell's men and women both finished seventh in the team standings. Both teams finished with 40 points and one point out of sixth place. Wartburg swept both team titles.
All-conference honors were awarded to the top three finishers in their respective events.
"I thought we had a pretty good conference meet," Cornell head coach Lonnie Speidel said. "We certainly wish we could have found a couple more points on both sides to bump us up a spot, but overall I was happy with our performances."
Cornell junior James Wohrley (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) captured the title in the pentathlon Friday, becoming the Rams' first IIAC indoor champion since James Klobucar won the 55 hurdles in 2007. He totaled 3,287 points, outdistancing Chris Buresh of Loras by 62 points. Wohrley won the shot put (39 feet, 11.25 inches), placed second in the long jump (20-00.50) and high jump (6-02), took fourth in the 55 hurdles (8.56) and fifth in the 1000 (2:59.81).
"James performed solidly through all five events," Speidel said. "He then came back and placed well in the pole vault (a season-best 11-11.75 for fifth) Friday evening."
Sophomore Andrew Tobben (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) gained all-conference status as a runner-up in the 3000, despite running in the slow heat in which he led wire to wire. He clocked a personal-best time of 8:56.59, only .20 seconds behind overall winner Brian Chenoweth of Wartburg. Tobben also shaved 30 seconds off his previous best mark in the 5000, placing fifth in 15:29.31.
"Andrew had a great weekend for us," Cornell assistant coach Dan Schofer said. "He showed great determination to earn all-conference honors in the 3K. Andrew battled hard in the 5000 against a field that was loaded and ended up being one of the deepest in conference history."
The Cornell men raced to a runner-up finish in the 4x800 relay. The all-conference foursome of sophomore Kirkwood Donavin (Salt Lake City, Utah/West), freshman Reed Skoog (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South), junior Quin Purkey (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) and freshman Adam Rooyakkers (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) recorded its best time of the year in 8:00.02. Central claimed a narrow victory in 7:59.59.
The Rams established a school record in the men's distance medley, placing fifth (10:30.99) with the group of Donavin, Skoog, Rooyakkers and freshman Chase Nowak (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain).
Cornell senior Rachelle Hawkins (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) earned all-conference indoor recognition for the fourth consecutive year with a runner-up finish in the 3000. She had a season-best mark of 10:33.81, less than two seconds behind Mary Bridget Corken of Loras. Hawkins also anchored the fifth-place distance medley relay to a school-record time of 12:33.63. The Cornell quartet, which included sophomore Allie Jagielo (Almond, Wis./Tri-County), sophomore Leanne Carberry (Idledale, Colo./Bear Creek) and senior Amanda Jepson (Wayland/WACO), shattered the previous school mark of 12:39.41 set in 2004.
"Rachelle ran a great anchor leg on our distance medley Friday and moved us up one spot," Schofer said. "She came back Saturday and ran a gutsy race in the 3000. To be a four-time all-conference runner in indoor track is an impressive feat. As the conference has improved, so has Rachelle's fitness and ability to compete."
Senior Brittany Sperl (Boyd, Wis./Stanley-Boyd) placed second in the triple jump, earning all-league status for the first time. She posted a mark of 34-01.25. Sophomore Michelle Hannemann (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) narrowly missed out on all-conference honors in the pole vault. She tied the second-best mark (9-00.25) in the field with two other competitors, but slid to fourth based on misses.
Hawkins and sophomore thrower Madison Craw (Mason City/Mason City) will compete at the Cyclone Qualifier Saturday in Ames. Craw will try to better her NCAA provisional mark in the shot put and Hawkins will seek a qualifying time in the mile.
