Cornell women win four events at Spartan Open
Coming up - Saturday, Feb. 27-28, at Iowa Conference Indoor Championships, Hoover Field House, Wartburg College, Waverly, 9 a.m.
The Rams had four individuals earn all-conference honors at the 2008 IIAC Indoor Championships for placing in the top three in their respective events.
Sophomore Madison Craw (Mason City/Mason City) was runner-up in the shot put. Senior Rachelle Hawkins (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) took third in the 3000 run and sophomore Michelle Hannemann (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) finished third in the pole vault. James Klobucar, a 2008 graduate, led the Cornell men with a runner-up finish in the 55 hurdles.
The Cornell women finished seventh in the team race with 33 points. The men took ninth with 34 points. Wartburg captured both men's and women's team titles last year.
Ram Review - The Cornell women's team picked up four event titles at the Spartan Open Saturday, hosted by the University of Dubuque in Dubuque. No team scores were recorded.
Hawkins scored her fourth individual title this indoor season with a victory in the mile run. She raced to a season-best time of 5 minutes, 7.68 seconds, just missing the NCAA provisional mark of 5:05. Hawkins edged IIAC competitors Hannah Weiss (5:08.66) of Loras and Katie Dolan (5:08.74) of Luther for the top spot.
Sophomore Leanne Carberry (Idledale, Colo./Bear Creek) posted her best time in winning the 400 (1:03.10). Senior Lindsey Kuhlmann (Fairbank/Wapsie Valley) set a personal record with an 11-second victory in the 3000 (10:59.37). Craw won the shot put with a solid mark of 42 feet, 2.25 inches.
"The women had a real good meet," Cornell head coach Lonnie Speidel said. "I think they are ready to go as we head into the conference championships. The men also had a lot of personal bests throughout the events. I'm confident that our men are just as ready as the women and will compete hard at the conference meet."
Freshman Kelsey Harper (Mt. Sterling, Ill./Brown County) had an impressive performance in the weight throw. She placed third with a mark of 45-11.25, breaking her previous best toss by nearly a meter. Harper also took fourth in the shot put.
Anna Guittar (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Northeast) qualified for the finals in the 55 hurdles and finished third in 9.8.
Sophomore Roli Teko-Folly (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo) posted Cornell's highest finish on the men's side, placing third in the triple jump (39-04). Freshman Marshall Kraker (Parshall, Colo./West Grant) established a personal best mark with a fifth-place showing in the shot put (43-00.50).
Sophomores Andrew Tobben (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) and Kirkwood Donavin (Salt Lake City, Utah/West) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the mile run. Tobben's time of 4:27.60 was seven seconds off the school record. Donavin clocked in at 4:28.24.
