Cornell women finish third at Dennis Young Classic

Coming up - Saturday, Feb. 21, at Dubuque Invitational, Dubuque, 10 a.m. Competing teams: Augustana, Cornell, Dubuque, Grinnell, Knox, Loras, Luther.

Ram Review - Seniors Brittany Sperl (Boyd, Wis./Stanley-Boyd) and Rachelle Hawkins (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) gathered individual titles in leading the Cornell women to a third-place team finish at the Dennis Young Classic Saturday at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake.

The Rams tallied 67 points in the five-team women's meet, won by Nebraska Wesleyan with 175.

Sophomore Roli Teko-Folly (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo) scored a pair of top-four finishes for the Cornell men's team, which finished fifth with 40 points. Nebraska Wesleyan won the men's title with 186 points.

Sperl continued her undefeated indoor season in the triple jump. She recorded a season-best leap of 34 feet, 5.25 inches. It was Sperl's fourth victory in as many meets in the triple jump.

Hawkins paced Cornell's distance runners, capturing the title in the mile run in 5 minutes, 9.42 seconds. She edged runner-up Catie Ellingson of Simpson by .63 seconds and finished less than three seconds off her own school record.

"I was impressed with Rachelle Hawkins' win in the mile," Cornell head coach Lonnie Speidel said. "She ran a very smart race and had a great kick at the end to win. Brittany Sperl had a very good sequence of jumps in the triple jump to win again."

The Cornell women scored well in the 3000, placing three runners in the top four. Sophomore Allie Jagielo (Almond, Wis./Tri-County) took second in 11:04.83, followed by Amanda Jepson (Wayland/WACO) in third and Andrea Aerts (David City, Neb./East Butler) in fourth.

Cornell's 4x400 relay placed third with the group of Leanne Carberry (Idledale, Colo./Bear Creek), Hawkins, Jessica Strains (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) and Anna Guittar (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Northeast). Sophomore Madison Craw (Mason City/Mason City) finished fourth in the weight throw and shot put. Sophomore Michelle Hannemann (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) was fourth in the pole vault.

Teko-Folly turned in the Rams' best finish on the men's side, placing second in the high jump with a mark of 6-1 1/2. He finished fourth in the triple jump (40-8 1/4). Teko-Folly set season-best marks in both events.

Dan Netwal (Eldridge/North Scott) tied for third in the high jump. Chase Nowak (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) and Jordan Stacey (Chicago, Ill./Northside College Prep Academy) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 3000. Kirkwood Donavin (Salt Lake City, Utah/West) took fifth in the 800.

"I thought we had a pretty good meet with a lot of personal records across the board," Speidel said. "We talked about moving forward as a team heading into the conference championships (Feb. 27-28) and I think we did that Saturday. We want to continue to improve and build some confidence going into the conference meet."
