Korn honored on all-IIAC First Team at utility position
MOUNT VERNON - Cornell College senior Casey Korn (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) has been named to the all-Iowa Conference Baseball First Team, it was announced Tuesday.
Korn, who played five different positions for the Rams this season, was honored at the utility position on the 17-player first unit. He earned honorable mention honors in 2008 and was also a first team utility pick in 2007.
Korn is only the second Ram to garner first team all-IIAC baseball honors twice in a career. Todd Reichart was selected first team catcher in 2004 and 2005.
The versatile Korn started 32 games this spring, including 15 at shortstop, nine at pitcher, eight at designated hitter, seven at third base and two at first base.
Korn batted .333 and led the team in runs (32), hits (38), doubles (12), walks (18), multiple-hit games (11) and assists (70). On the mound, he went 3-6 with a 5.76 earned run average. Korn struck out 56 batters in 65.2 innings pitched.
Korn started 117 of 120 games played in four seasons with the Rams. He ranks among the school's all-time leaders in hits (118), runs (81), doubles (32) and RBIs (76). Korn logged 220 innings on the mound and recorded 170 strikeouts.
The IIAC handed out individual awards to Wartburg's Jerrold Martijn (Pitcher of the Year) and Loras shortstop Nick Olberding (Position Player of the Year). Carl Tebon, of Loras, was voted Coach of the Year.
Cornell finished the 2009 campaign 10-23 overall and 7-14 in the league.
