MOUNT VERNON - Cornell College baseball player Ryan Fincham (Englewood, Colo./Englewood) has been named the Iowa Conference's Male Athlete of the Week for the period ending April 26.
Fincham is the first Ram to receive the league's top weekly award this spring season.
Fincham had a big week at the plate for the 9-20 Rams, who more than doubled their season win total with five consecutive wins over IIAC foes Central (11-9, 10-9) and Dubuque (10-3, 9-6 and 9-6). The junior outfielder batted .611 (11-for-18) over the five-game stretch with eight RBIs, five runs scored, three doubles and a home run. Fincham also recorded 12 putouts in the field.
Fincham is third on the team with a .340 batting average and owns a current five-game hitting streak. He has started 17 of 19 games played this season.
Fincham helped guide the Rams back into contention for a berth in the six-team Iowa Conference Tournament May 7-9. Cornell currently stands eighth in the league standings with a 6-11 record. The Rams are one game back in the loss column to sixth-place Simpson (9-12 IIAC) and is only percentage points behind seventh-place Central (7-11 IIAC).
Cornell has four league games remaining in the regular season. The Rams host Central in a single nine-inning game Wednesday and host a three-game series with league leader Loras Friday and Saturday at Ash Park Field in Mount Vernon.
Fincham, a 2005 graduate of Englewood High School, is majoring in history and psychology. He is the son of Brad and Patty Fincham, Englewood, Colo.
