Coming up - Friday, March 20, at Simpson (1x9), Indianola, 7 p.m.; Saturday, March 21, at Simpson (DH), Indianola, 1 p.m.

Ram review - Cornell rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 4-3 victory over Ashford in the second game of a nonconference doubleheader Sunday at Ash Park Field in Mount Vernon. The Rams dropped the opener, 5-3, in eight innings.

Cornell freshman Mark Corbeil (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette) plated the winning run in the nightcap, ending the Rams' six-game losing skid. Ashford (5-5) tied the game at 3-3 with an unearned run in the top of the sixth. The Rams (3-7) capitalized on a pair of Ashford miscues in the seventh to win it.

Andrew Patzke (Madison, Wis./Edgewood) led off Cornell's seventh with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. David Bartine (Des Moines/Roosevelt) walked, followed by a Michael Tierney (Cedar Rapids/Jefferson) groundout, putting runners at second and third with one out. Ashford intentionally walked Casey Korn (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) to load the bases for Corbeil. Corbeil hit a sharp grounder through the first baseman, allowing Patzke to cross the plate with the winning run.

Freshman Nick Weinmeister (Janesville/Janesville) picked up the win in relief, moving his record to 2-1. He did not surrender a hit or an earned run in two innings of work. Starter Adam Butler (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) and reliever Chris Handke (Bellevue/Bellevue) held the Saints to three hits over the first five innings.

Korn went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Tierney also had a pair of hits with a run and an RBI.

In the opener, Ashford's Jake Steve unlocked a 3-3 game with a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to lead the Saints to victory. The Saints scored three runs in the first to take an early lead. The Rams battled back with two runs in the fourth and tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth when Patzke scored on a wild pitch.

Korn (1-2) went the distance on the mound, allowing eight hits and four earned runs over eight innings. He struck out nine and walked one.

The Rams were held to three hits, getting a double from Korn and singles from Corbeil and Patzke.

Who's hot? - Korn extended his hitting streak to seven games, collecting three doubles in Sunday's games. Seven of his 14 hits this season have gone for extra bases, including five doubles and two home runs. Korn is batting .412 with a .735 slugging percentage and a team-high 14 runs scored.

Corbeil carries a team-best .789 slugging percentage with two doubles and a pair of homers. Sophomore Matt Pfister (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) leads the Rams in hitting with a .533 average.
