Ram review - Cornell batted .344 and averaged 7.2 runs during its four-game weekend in St. Louis, Mo. But the Rams' offense could not overcome the team's mistakes in the field or struggles on the mound.
Cornell finished 0-4 on the trip, dropping both ends of doubleheaders to Maryville (3-1, 23-5) Saturday and Fontbonne (17-8, 23-15) Sunday.
"Our defense and pitching was disappointing," Cornell head coach Frank Fishler said. "We hit the ball well enough to win three of the four games."
Cornell (2-6 overall) collected 14 extra-base hits over the weekend, including six home runs. Senior Casey Korn (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest), junior Matthew Shimanovsky (Niles, Ill./Niles West) and freshman Mark Corbeil (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette) all homered twice for the Rams.
Sophomore Matt Pfister (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) paced Cornell's hitting parade, batting .583 (7 of 12) with a pair of doubles and three RBIs. J.T. Pells (Northridge, Calif./Granada Hills) went 6-for-11 at the plate and Corbeil hit .500 with six RBIs. Korn and Shimanovsky each drove in six runs. Korn scored a team-high seven runs.
Cornell's pitching staff surrendered 66 hits in the four games and didn't get much help from a defense that committed 17 errors.
Korn fired a solid six innings in the 3-1 loss in Game 1 to Maryville, striking out five and walking one. Maryville broke open a 1-1 tie with a run in the fifth and one more in the sixth. Pfister drove in the lone run for Cornell, which was limited to three hits.
Maryville accounted for 23 hits in the 23-5 nightcap victory, pulling away early with an 11-run first inning. Korn belted a three-run homer in the first and Corbeil added a solo shot in the sixth. Pfister collected two of Cornell's five hits. The Rams committed six errors and allowed 12 unearned runs.
Cornell and Fontbonne combined for 68 hits and 63 runs in their doubleheader slugfest. In Game 1, Pells went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a double. Shimanovsky and Corbeil had two hits apiece. Korn connected for a two-run homer and finished with three RBIs and three runs scored. Corbeil had a solo homer and a double.
Shimanovsky had a big game at the plate in Game 2, going 3-for-5 with six RBIs and two runs scored. He slugged a pair of three-run homers in the first and second innings as the Rams took a 10-2 lead into the third.
