Rams place 16 student-athletes on academic all-conference spring teams
MOUNT VERNON - Cornell College placed 16 student-athletes on the 2009 Academic All-Iowa Conference spring teams, including seven from women's track and field.
To be eligible for academic all-IIAC honors, a student-athlete must compete at the varsity level, be at least a sophomore in academic standing and attain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The league recognized 189 student-athletes in six sports this spring.
Along with the seven student-athletes honored in women's track and field, the Rams had four academic all-conference performers in baseball, three in men's track and field and two in men's golf.
Cornell's academic recipients are, women's track and field: senior Brittany Sperl (Boyd, Wis./Stanley-Boyd), senior Rachelle Hawkins (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly), senior Amanda Jepson (Wayland/WACO), senior Jessica Strains (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South), sophomore Allie Jagielo (Almond, Wis./Tri-County), sophomore Ellie Hutchison (Greeley, Colo./Greeley Central), sophomore Andrea Aerts (David City, Neb./East Butler); baseball: senior Jeff Boyle (Richfield, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels), junior Matthew Shimanovsky (Niles, Ill./Niles West), junior Chris Handke (Bellevue/Bellevue), sophomore Andrew Patzke (Madison, Wis./Edgewood); men's track and field: junior Quin Purkey (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North), junior Nate Schueller (Galena, Ill./East Dubuque), junior Jordan Stacey (Chicago, Ill./Northside College Prep Academy); men's golf: junior Kyle Roberts (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) and sophomore Kyle Davy (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park).
A total of 38 Cornell student-athletes received academic all-IIAC accolades during the 2008-09 season, including 19 in the fall and three in the winter.
