Major & Minor Requirements

Major Requirements for Art History

A minimum of 11 course credits in the Department of Art and Art History, which include the following required courses:

  • Six course credits in art history
  • Three course credits in studio art, one of which must be Drawing I (103), Studio Art Basics (104), or Cultural Expressions (105)
  • Methodology (484)
  • Senior Thesis (487)

Major Requirements for Studio Art

A minimum of 11 course credits in the Department of Art and Art History, which include the following required courses:

  • Three course credits in art history, one of which must be Modern Art (260)
  • Five course credits in studio art, one of which must be Drawing I (103), Studio Art Basics (104), or Cultural Expressions (105)
  • Art Seminar (483)
  • Senior Thesis (487)
Notes:
  • Four of the courses listed above must be at or above the 300-level
  • Art Methods (371) may not be counted toward major
  • Transfer students must take a minimum of six art courses, including Art Seminar (483) or Methodology (484), and Senior Thesis (487) from Cornell College.
  • Art Seminar (483) or Methodology (484) must be taken junior or senior year
  • Senior Thesis (487) must be taken senior year

Teaching Major Requirements

    The requirements for the art major apply, but in addition to include one course credit in painting, one course credit in sculpture, and Art Methods (371). Teaching majors are advised to take courses which provide experience in a variety of media. In addition to the foregoing requirements for the subject major, prospective teachers must also apply for admission to the Teacher Education Program (preferably at the start of their sophomore year) and complete a second major in Secondary Education. Prospective teachers should request a current list of the specific teaching major course requirements from the Education Office.

    Minor Requirements

    Two minors are available. No courses, except ART 103 and ART 104, may be counted toward more than one minor under the supervision of the Department of Art and Art History. Transfer students must take at least three art courses from Cornell College.

Art History Minor

A minimum of six course credits in Art, which include:

  • At least four art history courses
  • Two studio courses, one of which must be Drawing I (103), Studio Art Basics (104), or Cultural Expressions (105)  
  • Individual projects and tutorials in art history or studio art will not be counted toward fulfillment of the minor

Studio Art Minor

A minimum of six course credits in Art, which include:

  • At least four studio courses, one of which must be Drawing I (103), Studio Art Basics (104), or Cultural Expressions (105)
  • Two art history courses, one of which must be Modern Art (260) 
  • Individual projects and tutorials in art history or studio art will not be counted toward fulfillment of the minor
